New Tarragona Sport Climbs Guidebook

The 3rd edition of the Tarragona Climbs Guidebook has recently been published.  It covers selected sport routes in the Sierra de Prades Mountains that are widely regarded as some of the finest single pitch sport routes in Europe.  The Sierra de Prades Mountains rise sharply behind the coastal city of Tarragona, located to the south of Barcelona in Catalunya.

The guidebook covers 11 crags and more than 4,800 routes across a wide range of grades from F3 to F9b to suit all levels and styles.  Covered are the 3 World class venues of Siurana, Montsant and Margalef.

Siurana is situated above a beautiful canyon with stunning limestone crags in all directions. Its position, charm and high quality routes make Siurana one of the most popular winter rock climbing destinations in Europe.  Montsant is a huge conglomerate crag up to 200m long that is split into tiers linked by spectacular paths and ladders. The character and style of climbing is on very solid and compact conglomerate rock that is full of finger pockets. Margalef is another conglomerate crag that provides powerful and sustained pocket pulling routes. The crags are situated either side of a secluded river meaning that you can climb either in the sun or shade, depending upon the time of day and your preference.

The other 8 areas covered are La Riba, Els Cogullons, El Penitent, Mont-ral, La Mussara, Vilanova de Prades, Arbolí, and Masriudoms. These crags are a mixture of limestone and conglomerate rock with many of the climbing areas at an altitude between 500m and 1000m.  The Tarragona area is a great location for a rock climbing holiday with the best conditions being found from the autumn through to the spring.
