Description

Malopasso is the definitive guidebook describing the rock climbing and sport climbing along the Amalfi coast, Positano, Palinuro, the Cilento Park and Maratea.  The Amalfi Coast is located on the southern coastline of the Sorrento Peninsula, just south of Naples (Napoli), in the Campania region of Italy.

On the Amalfi Coast you often climb in little-known places, among unusual scenarios, characterized by rock dwellings, churches, monasteries, where the colours of the mountain blend with the blue of the sea. During the winter months, the seaside villages take on a particular charm and climbing becomes a natural vehicle for learning about places, people, the past and history.  Leaving the maze of streets, and cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, the landscape changes radically as you approach the Cilento Park, Vallo di Diano and Alburni areas.

The vast majority of the routes are single pitch sport routes though there are some multi-pitch routes as well.  The area has a classic Mediterranean climate making climbing enjoyable from autumn through the winter and into spring.  The climbing is generally at a low altitude with some routes straight off the beach.

The guidebook describes 72 different climbing areas, including a section dedicated to the via ferratas routes found in the region and in the Lucanian Apennines.  All the routes are shown on colour topos along with a brief description and height.  For the multi-pitch routes the amount of fixed protection varies and this is detailed along with a description of each pitch, and the descent.  At the start of each area there is a good location map, information how to get there, and a QR code for the parking areas.  Symbols are then used to provide information regarding altitude, exposure to the sun, quality of the crag, quality of the bolting, and approach time.  A chart is also provided detailing the number of routes at each grade.

Published in December 2023 (revised 4th edition) by Versante Sud this guidebook is written in Italian text throughout, though a large amount of information is conveyed by symbols.
