Greek bouldering areas
The area around Athens and the island of Tinos are the 2 most extensive bouldering regions in Greece. The map shows all the other main bouldering areas that have been developed in Greece.
Bouldering on Tinos Island
The island of Tinos is the most extensive bouldering area in Greece, with a wide range of problems on excellent granite rock. The excellent Tinos-Bloc guidebook covers the bouldering on Tinos Island and describes nearly 600 problems across a wide range of grades. The bouldering described in this guidebook is situated in the north east of the island though there is the potential for 1000’s of more problems to be developed.
The island of Ikaria (Icaria) has a paradise of impressive granite boulders that are located both close to the sea and in the mountains, making it is possible to boulder on Ikaria throughout the year. The excellent Ikaria Bouldering Guidebook describes over 300 problems across a wide range of grades. Find out more about bouldering in Ikaria.

Bouldering on Kos Island
The island of Kos also offers some excellent bouldering on granite rock. Most climbers only visit Kos on their way to Kalymnos, but a bouldering trip here in its own right is very worthwhile. There are around 300 problems across a wide range of grades, plus there is lots of potential to open up new problems and sectors.
Bouldering on mainland Greece
The area around Athens, and in particularly Mt Penteli, is the largest bouldering area on mainland Greece. The bouldering is mainly on rugged schist rock that offers excellent friction and provides a wide variety of climbing styles with many jugs, crimps and slopers. In total there are 6 main areas with over 800 boulder problems across a wide range of grades from Fb4 to Fb8b+, as well as many unfinished projects. All of these problems are covered in the Attica Bouldering Guidebook. Find out more about bouldering around Athens.
In the north of Greece there are 2 other granite bouldering areas, called Pinovo and Maronia. There are approximately 150 problems at Pinovo and around 100 problems at Maronia across a wide range of grades. Again there are lots of potential to open up new problems and sectors.
The sandstone bouldering at Rizoma is situated close to the climbing at Meteora and it is possible to combine an excellent trip of trad/sports climbing and bouldering in this compact area. Find out more about bouldering at Rizoma.
The limestone bouldering at Varasova (close to Patras) is limited to the boulders that are scattered beneath the main wall, with around 50 problems. Find out more about bouldering at Varasova.
The best time of the year for bouldering in Greece is generally from the autumn through until spring. In the summer it is just too hot. The exception to this is Ikaria where there are many boulder problems in the mountains that are ideal for bouldering in the summer.
