Description

This is the definitive guidebook describing the rock climbing and sport climbing to be found at Vratsa, which is Bulgaria’s largest rock climbing region. Here there is a mixture of single pitch sport routes through the long multi-pitch routes up to 350m long on good quality limestone rock. These longer routes tend to be traditional routes (alpine) though most have some in-situ anchors.

The guidebook is split into 6 areas and describes 583 routes. Around 250 of these are fully equipped sport routes, with rest being trad, alpine or mixed (partially equipped with in-situ anchors. All the sport routes are shown on colour photo topos, along with the grade, route length and the number of quickdraws required. For the traditional and alpine routes, there is information about the gear required, pitch-by-pitch descriptions and descent information. All the traditional and alpine routes are shown on a combination of colour photo topos and detailed hand-drawn topos.

Vratsa is located around 110km to the north of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, and is quickly developing as a tourist destination for outdoor activities. The best time to climb at Vratsa is in the spring and autumn though it is possible to climb in the summer providing you choose sectors that are in the shade.
