Description

This is the definitive guidebook covering all the traditional rock climbing found at Scafell and the Wasdale Valley, and is a must have guidebook for lovers of rock climbing in the Lake District! Wasdale Head, on the west of the district, is the traditional base to access these classic crags, with a hotel, bar, outdoor shop, toilets and a camp site.

Scafell’s barrel-shaped buttress is a formidable crag, with fantastic traditional routes from VS through to hard E grades. Here you will find “The Lord of the Rings”, graded at E2 5c, 342m long, given 5 stars, and described as England’s finest route! Mosedale and Nether Wasdale offer an esoteric choice; whilst Buckbarrow at the entrance of the valley offers you an interesting alternative if the high crags are out of condition.

The guidebook covers nearly 600 routes, many of which are long multi pitch routes in a classic setting. At the start of each major section there is a full colour Harvey map to get you to your chosen destination. There are also GPS co-ordinates for parking, along with the OS grid ref. All the routes are clearly shown on colour photo topos, making it easy to access your chosen route.

Fully updated and completely revised in March 2014 by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club (FRCC), this guidebook is in English text throughout. Interspersed throughout the guidebook is a superb collection of action photographs that will inspire you to plan your routes.
