Description
This is a selective guidebook covering the rock climbing in Donegal in Northwest Ireland. The variety of rock climbing found in Donegal is huge, with everything from sea cliffs, and sea stacks, to islands and two major Irish mountain ranges. The area is famous for its sea cliff climbing and is home to the greatest number of sea stacks in Ireland as well as its highest.
This guidebook describes just under 600 routes, across 16 different areas in Donegal. These include a wide range of single and multi-pitch routes that you will find above the sea, by the road, on the islands and in the mountains.
The climbing on the coastal crags offers a diverse range of styles on different rock types. The mixture of sandstone, quartzite, basalt, and granite rock offers everything from gymnastic overhangs to technical slab climbing. The main islands of Gabhia (Gola) and Uaigh (Owey) have hundreds of climbs of the highest quality on granite rock, whilst the huge granite cliffs in the mountains offer long multi-pitch adventures.
All the routes are shown on colour photo topos along with a description. For each area there is approach information plus GPS co-ordinates for the parking area and the crag. There is further information about the aspect, conditions and type of climbing to be found.
The guidebook was published in August 2026 (revised 2nd edition) by Three Rock Books. This guidebook will provide the first-time visitor and the more seasoned Donegal climber alike a lifetime of fantastic rock climbing in some of the most beautiful, remote and unspoilt places in Ireland.
