Description
The Juliana Trail is a 270-kilometer long-distance hiking route around Triglav National Park, embracing the entire eastern part of the Julian Alps in Slovenia. Officially opened in October 2019, it has quickly become one of the most popular long-distance alpine hiking trails in Europe.
The trail is of moderate difficulty, avoids high summits, and leads through forests, along rivers and lakes, through alpine valleys, and over mountain passes. Although the trail connects some of Slovenia’s best-known tourist destinations - such as Kranjska Gora, Bled, Bohinj, Bovec and the Soca Valley - it mainly passes through quieter valleys and villages, often following old and nearly forgotten paths.
Since the trail is circular, it can be started anywhere, though its official starting point is in Kranjska Gora. From there it follows the Sava Dolinka River to Radovljica, continues via Bled onto the Pokljuka Plateau, descends into Bohinj, and then crosses the ridges of the Tolmin -Bohinj Mountains into the Baska grapa valley before continuing toward Most na Soci. From there the trail follows the Soca River, crossing the Predel Pass and passing the Fusine Lakes before returning to the Sava Valley and back to Kranjska Gora.
The guidebook breaks down the trail into 16 sections. Each section has a map, detailed description, points of interest, and a summary showing distance, elevation gain/loss, walking time and difficulty (graded from 1 to 3).
