Description

This selective guidebook describes the multi-pitch routes, single pitch sport crags and Via Ferratas in the East Tyrol region of Austria. East Tyrol is in the south of Austria bordering northern Italy. The climbing in East Tyrol is dominated by mountains such as the chalky Carnic Alps, the Lienzer Dolomiten in the South and the 3000m+ peaks in the Hohe Tauern, with its green schist and gneissic faces.

The aim of this East Tyrol climbing guide is to provide an overview of all multi-pitch routes from Laserzkessel above Lienz, up to the steep, green schist faces of the Virgen Valley. It also covers most of the single pitch sport crags in East Tyrol from the Dolomiten-Hut all the way to Falkenstein and the surrounding regions, along with 17 Via Ferratas areas.

All the routes are shown on a mixture of hand-drawn topos and colour photo topos. For the multi-pitch routes and Via Ferratas there is route description, what equipment is required, plus approach and descent information. The multi-pitch routes are given UIAA grades, with many routes graded from 5 to 8 (F4 to F7a), though harder routes are also included. French grades are given for the sport routes, along with additional information regarding altitude, orientation, quality of the bolting, popularity, and even if there is phone reception.

Published in August 2019 by Versante Sud this guidebook is in English text throughout. The mountains and crags of East Tyrol are less popular than other areas of Austria. This has nothing to do with the quality of the climbing but due, until now, the lack of good guidebooks.
