Description

This is the definitive guidebook to the rock climbing, bouldering and winter climbing found around Dumfries and Galloway in southwest Scotland.  The guidebook describes 1,760 routes across 64 crags, from the Galloway Hills, and Lowther Hills to outcrops at Dumfries, and the Gallway sea-cliffs.  The routes are on high-quality granite and diorite rock that are always in beautiful locations but above all, they are unfrequented and unspoilt.

The guidebook is split into 3 areas, which are:

  1. Galloway Hills to the north of Newton Stewart.  32 mountain crags are described that offer some wonderful climbing, particularly to the lovers of remoter solitude.  Approaches vary from short roadside crags to some that are long and the going extremely boggy.
  2. Moffat and Dumfries.  The main climbing here is found at Craighoar in the Lowther Hills near Moffet, and at the excellent granite outcrop of Clifton near Dumfries.
  3. Galloway sea-cliffs.  The 320km Galloway coast offers 28 crags providing a wealth of diverse climbing.  These quick-drying and uncrowded cliffs enjoy the best weather in Scotland, making all-year climbing a distinct possibility.  The bouldering at Thirlstane and Garheugh, and the granite and diorite cliffs on the southern Rhins Peninsula rank with the best climbing anywhere.

All the routes are shown on colour photo topos along with a short description.  For each crag there is a detailed location map, GPS co-ordinates for the parking area, and approach information.  Further information is given regarding orientation, altitude, and the height of the crag.

Published in June 2026 by the Scottish Mountaineering Club, it includes many inspiring action photographs.
