Rock climbing in Bergen

There are over 100 crags surrounding Bergen in southwest Norway offering both sport climbing and trad rock climbing on granite and gneiss rock. There is a wide variety of climbing with both sea cliffs amongst the fjords and inland crags to choose from, with routes across a wide range of grades (F4’s to F8’s). The style of climbing includes slabs and cracks, along with overhangs, roofs, crimps, undercuts, finger cracks and jugs. Virtually all the routes are single pitch, though there are some multi-pitch routes up to 90m long.


There are over 2,300 routes at Bergen with roughly 2/3 of them sport routes and 1/3 of them are trad routes. The climbing at Bergen is perfect for the medium to advanced climber with most of the routes in the F6a to F7a grade range. However, there are still plenty of easier routes as well many harder routes in the F7b to F8b grade range.

Bergen climbing season. The best time of the year to climb at Bergen is during the summer months. With virtually constant daylight from mid-spring to mid-summer it is also possible to climb late into the evening. Yes it does rain though the Bergen rain is generally located on the foothills of the mountains that surround the city center. Whilst most of the climbing is located on the archipelago towards the open sea, where weather is significantly drier.


The city of Bergen is a great place to stay and many of the crags are easily reached within a 30-minute drive. Several of the crags are within walking distance from the city centre and 29 of the crags can be reached via bus.
