New Sicily Rock – San Vito Sport Climbing Guidebook

A new edition of the Sicily Rock – San Vito Sport Climbing guidebook has just been published. Discover some great sea cliff sport climbing that would be ideal for your next rock climbing holiday. There is a great variety of routes ranging from crimpy technical slabs, to tufa-infested overhangs and caves, and powerful futuristic roofs. There is an excellent range of grades with many quality routes between F4a and F7a, all on quality limestone rock. There are also plenty of harder routes right up to F9a.

San Vito lies to the north of Sicily near the city of Trapani. Along the west side of San Vito is a great coastal cliff that is nearly 4km long, called Scogliera di Salinella. There are over 1,200 sport routes along this cliff, and in the general area of San Vito. The new guidebook details:

314 routes up to F5c

587 routes from F6a to F6c+

267 routes from F7a to F7c+

111 routes above F8a

Rising up from the east side of San Vito is Monte Monaco, where there is a mixture of bolted and trad multi pitch routes from 150m to 400m long. In addition, there is 1 route that is 645m long and graded at F5c – an excellent day’s adventure. All of these routes are covered in this new guidebook along with the crags at Castelluzzo near Macari and Custonaci near Scurati, which are close to San Vito.

The best time to visit San Vito for climbing is from October through to mid-May as many of the crags face south and west. Getting to San Vito is very easy with excellent connections to Trapani and Palermo airports from all over Europe. San Vito has plenty of self-catering accommodation options and hotels, plus there is even a campsite situated above the Scogliera di Salinella crag, with the first routes being only a 1-minute walk away.
