New Innsbruck Rock Climbing Guidebook
Innsbruck in Austria is often described as the climbing capital of the Tirol Region. This city of 120,000 inhabitants is geographically located in the heart of the Eastern Alps, and attracts mountain sport enthusiasts from all over the World. Sport climbing has a long tradition in Innsbruck offering a wide range of grades from beginner level up to some of the hardest routes in the World.
The greater Innsbruck area covers a wide variety of climbing and rock type. The main rock type of the area is limestone and conglomerate, but there is also gneiss and granite to be found. The majority of the routes are single pitch sport climbing but there are also plenty of bolted multi-pitch routes and even some bouldering to explore. The altitude of the crags also varies from less than 1,000m around Innsbruck to over 2,000m in the surrounding mountains. This means it is possible to climb in this area throughout the year especially as the crags face many different orientations to catch the sun or shade as required.
A new comprehensive guidebook called Innsbruck Rock has just been published describing many 1,000’s of sport routes in 67 main climbing areas, across a wide variety of grades. It covers an area from Silz in the west, including Telfs, to Innsbruck and Hall in the East, plus south of Innsbruck to Steinach Am Brenner. It covers many single pitch sport routes, plus bolted multi-pitch routes and some bouldering.
