Description

Western Grit describes the traditional gritstone rock climbing found on the western side of the Peak District, the gritstone quarries and edges in southern Lancashire, and the sandstone crags in Cheshire. The guidebook also includes a limited number of bouldering routes.

In total the guidebook details over 2,400 selected routes at 35 different crags, which are: In Staffordshire, the gritstone crags of The Roaches, Hen Cloud, Ramshaw, Newstones, and Baldstones. Around Buxton, the gritstone crags of Windgather, Castle Naze, and New Mills Tor. The remote Kinder moorland crags of Kinder South, Kinder North, and Kinder Downfall. The moorland crags around Bleaklow, of Shining Clough, Laddow, Tintwistle Knarr, and Hobson Moor. The Chew Valley crags of Wimberry, Wilderness Rocks, Dovestones Edge, Ravenstones, Standing Stones, Upperwood Quarry, Alderman, Running Hill Pits, and Den Lane. The southern Lancashire gritstone quarries and edges at Denham, Anglezarke, Wilton 1, 2 and 3, Brownstones, Egerton Quarry, Cadshaw Castle Rocks, Summit Quarry, Blackstone Edge, and Cow's Mouth Quarry. In Cheshire, the fine sandstone buttresses of Helsby, Frodsham, and Pex Hill.

At the start of each crag there is a location map, and a good description giving a general overview of the crag and type of rock climbing to be found there. All the routes are illustrated on full colour photographs, topo style, with English grades. All this makes the usual high quality guidebook that is now expected of Rockfax with lots of excellent action photographs.

Published by Rockfax in April 2009 this guidebook is a fantastic upgrade of the popular 2003 publication, and is in English text throughout.
