Description

This comprehensive guidebook describes over 290 boulder problems at Rifugio Barbara, one of Italy’s premier highaltitude bouldering destinations.  Rifugio Barbara is found in the Valle Carbonieri in Northwest Italy, which is located to the southwest of Turin on Italian-French border.  The first boulders are located around the Rifugio Barbara and the alpine meadows close by, though most of the problems are located further into the valley scattered on the rising hillsides.

The serpentinite rock found here, produces a variety of reddish, ochre, greenish, and black patterns.  The style of the bouldering is from easy slabs to vertical walls and severely overhanging roofs that have produced some of the hardest boulder problems in the world.  In total there are over 290 problems across a wide range of problems from Fb1 to Fb9a+ in 8 different sectors.  A breakdown of the grades is as follows:

  • Fb4: 18 problems
  • Fb5: 25 problems
  • Fb6a to Fb6b+: 51 problems
  • Fb6c to Fb7a+: 56 problems
  • Fb7b to 7c+: 53 problems
  • Fb8 and over: 33 problems including Exodia, the world’s first Fb9a+ problem by Elias Iagnemma.

In addition to the above problems there is a historical purple circuit consisting of a further 46 problems graded from Fb1 to Fb6b.

The best time of the year to boulder at Rifugio Barbara is from the spring through to the autumn as the boulders are at an altitude of around 1,760m to 1,800m high – in a stunning alpine setting.

All the problems are shown on colour photo topos, along with a brief description.  For each of the 8 different sectors there is a boulder map.
