Ostrov Rock Climbing Guidebook
Description
This is a comprehensive rock climbing guidebook for Ostrov (Eiland), an area within the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, located in the northern part of the Czech Republic.
The climbing in Ostrov is all about sandstone towers and walls that are situated all around the village of Ostrov. There are more than 400 crags at Ostrov with the routes between 6m and 50m long, though the majority are around 20m long. The guidebook details over 3,300 routes across a wide of grades, with the emphasis on medium and easy routes.
The routes at Ostrov are a mixture of Trad and sport. The in-situ gear ranges from bolts to rings, whilst the Trad gear utilises slings for threads or knotted slings to insert into cracks. However most routes use a combination of slings for threads or knotted slings, along with between 1 and 4 fixed rings or bolts. The use of nuts and cams, along with chalk is banned in the area. The guidebook has a system for rating the protection on the routes, and is described as the following:
- Well bolted, effectively sport climbing (39 routes)
- Good bolting, but some slings must be placed (367 routes)
- Poorly bolted and demanding, long falls are possible and should be factored in (1,124 routes)
- Traditional, adventurous and at times dangerous (1,655 routes)
- Bad, extremely dangerous with a high risk of injury (184 routes)
In total the guidebook describes over 3,300 routes that are all shown on colour photo topos. For each sector there is an approach map, access description, plus GPS co-ordinates for each sector.
