New Climbing in Manikia Guidebook
Manikia is destined to become the next big climbing destination in Greece after Kalymnos and Leonidio. You know it’s going to be a good place if Petzl have a road trip there – they did just that at Manikia in March 2022. So where is Manikia? It is a 2-hour drive to the northeast of Athens on the island of Evia. However, this island is linked via a road bridge, so no ferries are involved in getting to Manikia, and over half of the route is on motorways.
The climbing at Manikia is on good quality limestone rock, and there are currently over 420 routes. There is a wide range of grades from F4’s up to F9a, though the majority of them are in in the F6’s and F7’s. The harder routes tend to be huge 30m to 40m tufa-strewn journeys through massive overhangs, whilst the easier routes are on grey limestone vertical walls and slabs. The majority of the routes are all single pitch up to 40m long, plus there are also 15 good quality multi-pitch routes up to 250m long with grades from F6a+ to F7b.
A new Climbing in Manikia Guidebook has just been published. It has been produced by an organisation called the Manikia Project, who are dedicated to creating a climbing community for International climbers and the local community. All the profits of the guidebook are invested in the bolting of the routes and the community as a whole.
