An unknown climber at Vale de Poios, in the Serra do Sico Mountains

The photograph opposite shows an unknown climber at Vale de Poios, in the Serra do Sico Mountains to the north of Lisbon. This limestone crag has over 180 routes across a wide range of grades from F5 to F8a.

The Serra do Sico Mountains are located near the town of Leiria, to the north of Lisbon, where there are 3 excellent sport climbing crags, Redinha, Vale de Poios, and Buracus do Casmilo. All of these crags are situated in pleasant hills and their altitude makes them perfect to escape the hot sun, as they are significantly cooler than the coast

This photograph was taken by Ricardo Alves and it appears in the Portugal rock climbing guidebook that is available to buy from our shop.
