Rock climbing around Sarajevo

Sarajevo is situated in a basin that is surrounded by green hills, mountains and canyons.  There is a rich history of climbing within Sarajevo with 10 established crags, situated on all sides of the city.  The three largest crags near Sarajevo are Dariva, Nahorevo, and Bukovik, with Ormanj another large crag located to the southwest of the city.

Rock climbing at Dariva

There are 3 crags situated close to the city centre including Dariva one of the oldest sport climbing areas within Bosnia.  The climbing at Dariva is quite technical on mostly vertical limestone faces.  There are a few bulges and slabs that are characterized by smaller features such as crimps and rounded holds.  There are nearly 50 routes at Dariva across a wide range of grades and there are some 2-pitch routes.

Rock climbing at Bukovik

Bukovik is only a short 20 minute drive north of Sarajevo and is situated in a picturesque setting.  The climbing is on compact limestone rock and there are over 60 sport climbing routes spreads across 2 sectors.  There is a mixture of shorter beginner friendly routes along with longer intermediate routes in the French 6th and 7th grades.

Bosnia and Herzegovina rock climbing guidebookNahorevo is a new crag that was initially developed in 2020, and again is only a short 20 minute drive north of Sarajevo.  The climbing is a mixture of technical slabs and powerful overhangs on excellent limestone rock.  There are some 40m long routes thar span the full height of the crag that are particularly popular.
