The Blautal (Blau Valley) is located south of Stuttgart, and close to the city of Ulm, as shown on the map opposite.
The style of rock climbing at Blautal is all about sport routes on limestone rock, with lots of pockets. The vast majority of the routes are single pitch, though there are some multi-pitch routes up to 3 pitches long. The map opposite shows over 30 crags, which provide almost 650 routes across a good range of grades.
The best time to climb at Blautal is from March through to November. With regards to gear a 60m rope will generally be OK, though it is recommended to bring a 70m rope, with the occasional route requiring an 80m rope. 12 to 15 quickdraws will be sufficient, plus it is recommended to bring a small rack of wires plus slings to thread the numerous pockets. The definitive guidebook for the area is called Blautal Rock, which is available to buy from our shop.
