Rock climbing and bouldering at Allgäu

The Allgäu region is located in southern Germany, adjacent to the Austrian border and is one of the Germany’s popular tourist destinations. The area has lush green valleys and cold mountain lakes that are overlooked by snow-capped Alpine peaks. There is an incredible amount of sport climbing and bouldering to be found in this region, particularly around the towns of Kempten, Sonthofen, Oberstdorf, and Füssen (on the German/Austria border).

The largest area is between the towns of Kempton and Oberstdorf, and concentrated around Sonthofen. Here there are 62 crags and over 1,000 sport routes across a wide range of grades, which are almost entirely single pitch. There are also 17 bouldering crags, with the majority of these to the north of Sonthofen. This area also has a good selection of different rock types, with limestone, conglomerate and sandstone to choose from for both sport climbing and bouldering.

The area around the town of Füssen (on the German/Austria border) has 24 sport climbing crags, which is all on limestone rock. The majority of the routes are single pitch, though there are some multi-pitch routes up to 3-pitches long. There is also a small amount of bouldering to be found.

There is also some sport climbing across the border in Austria, near Ruette. Again this is on limestone, and is classed as being part of the Allgäu area.
